The Senior Production Geologist is accountable for delivering on-mine production geology function support including the design, execution and monitoring of the South Deep integrated operational geology strategy and programme incorporating Exploration and Production Geology. Drawing off an established mine geology track record, the incumbent is responsible for the technical evaluation and optimisation of existing and new geological methodologies, techniques, and technologies to drive efficient operational delivery of mapping, drilling, sampling, logging, grade control and ore flow reconciliation as well as all associated QA/QC functions. As a Senior Production Geologist, the successful incumbent assumes responsibility for embedding a values-based culture of safety, productivity, and respectful engagement in all aspects of operational delivery.
Minimum Requirements:
- Postgraduate qualification in Geosciences or Mineral Resource Management Discipline e.g. BSc (Hons) Geology, BSc (Hons) Geosciences etc.
- At least 10 years’ experience in operational Geology / Mineral Resources Management
- Proven track record in mine production geology, underground mapping, geological modelling, orebody evaluation, sampling/assaying and mine-to-mill reconciliation
- Established QA/QC capability across the geology value-chain
- Proven proficiency in applying relevant geological modelling software (Datamine/Leapfrog etc.).
- Experience in developing and maintaining spatial geological and structural models
- Proven track record in participating and leading project(s) and/ or operational reviews
- Demonstrated ability to apply a systematic, knowledge-based problem-solving and structured methodologies to investigate risks and opportunities that will lead to effective, value-add technical solutions and process optimisation
- Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment
Key Competencies:
- Advanced operational safety leadership experience with demonstrated safety delivery record
- Demonstrated experience in leading and working with diverse teams and achieving sustained high performance.
- Excellent written and spoken communication and stakeholder management skills
- Understanding of mining geology Mineral Resource development as well as Research and Development
- Knowledge of best practice across the different processes withing the geology function
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Participate in and contribute towards the formulation and execution of the mine’s various safety, health, environment and risk management campaigns
- Lead work teams in the execution of all technical programmes, including mapping, sampling, drilling, grade control, and reconciliation processes
- Embed and maintain standardized geological practices for mine geology, geological modelling, exploration drilling, ore sampling/assaying and mine-to-mill reconciliation
- Continuously evaluate and optimise resource delineation and grade control programmes and, implement remediation interventions as required
- Maintain up to date spatial geological data such as structural block models while maintaining systems to optimise exploration delivery, diamond drilling, resource modelling and estimation
- Improve awareness of and input into technical risk evaluation at site for geosciences and development of processes and action plans to mitigate such risks
- Ensure that geoscientific data and documents are appropriately managed throughout the geology value chain and that the most updated and complete version is stored in the appropriate storage location
- Participate / lead regular and ad hoc short, medium and long-term operational planning and scheduling sessions with a focus on actively identifying and collaboratively solving operational delivery challenges
- Lead the coordination of geological support to the Mining and Metallurgy departments while ensuring optimal data-driven analysis to enable detailed mine planning, scheduling and ore characterization and extraction
- Contribute towards compilation and publication of Annual Resource Statement in ensuring alignment with relevant mineral reporting codes and standards such as SAMREC, JORC, ROPOs, etc
- Conduct appropriate research on emerging geological leading practice to identify potential methodologies, techniques and technologies to optimise application, improve efficiency and geological confidence at South Deep
- Effective contract management resulting in excellent safety and planned productivities
