POSITION: Assistant Supervisor Environmental Engineering: Occupational Hygiene
JOB GRADING: C – Lower
DEPARTMENT: Environmental Engineering
SITE: South Deep Gold Mine
The Assistant Supervisor is responsible for measuring, monitoring and reporting on surface and underground environmental conditions for occupational hygiene. The role’s responsibilities include maintaining air quality monitoring programs, data capturing, sampling, ensuring compliance with legislation and analysing results through a systematic approach.
Minimum Requirements:
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- Air Quality Analyst Certificate
- Practical experience in Mine Environmental Control and environmental monitoring practices within a mining environment
- Minimum 3–5 years' experience in, air quality monitoring, or occupational hygiene compliance within mining, industrial, or heavy manufacturing environments
- Experience with air quality legislation, monitoring equipment, and occupational hygiene reporting
- Experience working within an ISO 14001 management system environment
- Valid driver's license
- Be declared medical fit for the position and environment, as determined by risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

Key Competencies:
- Proven track record in safety leadership
- Strong inter and intra-team collaboration skills to ensure effective coordination with sampling issuers, supervisors, and operational teams
- Ability to operate, calibrate, download, inspect, and maintain air quality monitoring equipment for dust, noise, Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM), and other pollutants as and when necessary
- Sound understanding of the processes and methodologies utilized to ensure compliance to the DMPR guideline in terms of a Monitoring Programme for Airborne Pollutants
- High attention to detail, good planning and organising ability, and adaptability to changing sampling priorities and operational conditions
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (especially Excel) for capturing, compiling, and reporting environmental monitoring data accurately and timeously
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure health and Safety of self and team members by applying relevant standards and procedures in all planning and execution of maintenance activities
- Perform inspections in accordance with the MHSA regulations and company standards
- Contribute to the culture of Zero Harm by adhering to all requirements as laid down by legislation health safety environmental security policies and procedures and by the application of specific instructions to own work area and task completion
- Actively support the company’s strategies and initiatives to promote a respectful, diverse and inclusive workplace with a culture of accountability and care
- Schedule monitoring activities and plan tasks while ensuring alignment with relevant aspects of operational Code of Practices (COPs) for Airborne Pollutants, Personal Noise, and Dust Particle Management (DPM), in line with the DMRE Guidelines
- Schedule and conduct surface and underground Environmental Engineering and occupational hygiene inspections
- Prepare necessary reports on inspections highlighting key observations and recording recommendations for required corrective actions
- Monitor achievement of daily, weekly, and monthly occupational hygiene standards and targets
- Collate and compile Environmental Engineering Inspection and Monitoring Program Reports
- Implement and monitor relevant occupational hygiene personal monitoring programs reporting on noteworthy observations and recommendations for required corrective actions
- Participate in relevant occupational hygiene standard committees and forums
- Participate in overexposure investigations to ensure quality control and information accuracy
- Deliver on assigned ad-hoc tasks such as presentations, investigations and projects in line with the role and duties
