POSITION: Supervisor Environmental Engineering
JOB GRADING: C Upper
DEPARTMENT: Health and Environmental Engineering
SITE: South Deep Gold Mine
The Supervisor Environmental Engineering is accountable for delivering operational occupational health, hygiene, ventilation and refrigeration technical support to the operation. These accountabilities include the execution of projects and research as delegated by the appointed Section 12.(1) lead and, to assist with the effective management and co-ordination of the Environmental Engineering team’s daily operational tasks to meet departmental targets and objectives in line with legislation, mine standards, processes and systems
Minimum Requirements:
- Grade 12 or equivalent with a Certificate in Mine Environmental Control
- At least 3 years’ experience in mine Environmental Engineering with operational support on occupational health, hygiene, ventilation and refrigeration
- Proven working knowledge of relevant legislation in respect of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA)
- Computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Office packages
- Valid driver’s license, Code 08 (EB)
- Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

- Self-starter and able to work with minimum supervision
- Attention to detail and have a meticulous and well-organised work method
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Participate in and lead various departmental/sectional safety, health, environmental and risk management campaigns
- Monitor legal compliance in terms of MHSA, detail any observations and make appropriate recommendations to address areas of improvement
- Participate in the compilation of relevant operational standards, policies, procedures, Codes of Practice, etc.
- Perform routine occupational health and hygiene measurements, special investigations and compile appropriate reports detailing observations/findings and remediation recommendations
- Participate in and lead delegated aspects of projects designed to improve or optimise systems and processes
- Participate in the planning, implementing, and reviewing of short, medium and long-term ventilation and refrigeration requirements for the respective sections
- Provide advice and guidance in all areas of accountability relating to Environmental Engineering to enable set industry milestone compliance
- Manage the performance of direct reports where applicable in accordance with the performance management policy and procedure
- Collaborate with different departments to drive the Gold Fields culture of having one team, a respectful working place, working smarter together and unlocking potential
