POSITION: Supervisor Health & Safety - Business Partners
JOB GRADING: C Upper
DEPARTMENT: Safety
SITE: South Deep Gold Mine
The Supervisor Health & Safety is responsible for partnering with Business Partners (Contractors), operational leadership, and their teams to assess, enhance, and ensure the application, completeness, and quality of operational health and safety management systems, processes, policies, procedures, and standards. The incumbent plays a key role in collaboratively developing plans and interventions to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and operational standards. Additionally, the role supports the implementation of campaigns that drive optimal and sustainable safety management practices.
Minimum Requirements:
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- Degree/National Diploma in Health and Safety Management or equivalent
- Completed COMSOC 1 and 2 Certification
- Trade Certificate or a Blasting Certificate
- Qualified as lead auditor for NOSA, OHSAS 18001 & ISO 14001
- Minimum of 2 years’ trackless mining experience including appreciation for shaft and related underground infrastructure
- At least 5 years’ experience as a safety specialist in leading Business Partner (contractor) safe work practice
- Valid driver’s license, Code 08 (EB)
- Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

Key Competencies:
- Proven safety leadership capability with established safety campaign delivery record
- Accomplished frontline team and people leader with advanced inter and intra-team collaboration
- Effective communicator with sound spoken and written English communication skills
- Proven track record of applying initiative, being a self-starter and work independently
- Proficiency in ICAM and RCAT root cause analysis and implementation of corrective actions
- Experienced in implementing, managing and auditing safety management systems and provide actionable insights
- Knowledgeable in ISO 45001:2018 safety standards
- Ability to analyse and interpret statistical safety data, risk assessments and safety improvements
- Knowledge of Tailing Storage Facilities and environmental management
- In-depth knowledge of the Mine Health & Safety Act (Act 29 of 1996)
- Experienced in Microsoft Office Suite, SyncroMine and Isometrix
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure the Health and Safety of self and team members by applying relevant standards and procedures in the planning and execution of operational activities
- Contribute to the culture of Zero Harm by participating in and contributing to operational safety campaigns, applying relevant legislative, operational and safe work standards and regulations and, instituting and monitoring appropriate remedial actions as required
- Serve as the key point of contact for all Business Partner safety matters, ensuring effective communication and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders
- Conduct inspections, investigations, audits, and quality control activities to ensure compliance with MHSA regulations, explosives management, operational standards, and Business Partner safety performance, providing actionable recommendations for improvements
- Lead and facilitate comprehensive operational risk assessments and investigations for Business Partners, including bow-tie analyses, ICAM or RCAT methodologies , to proactively identify potential risks, assess risk controls and strengthen mitigation strategies
- Monitor Business Partner adherence to employee onboarding and refresher procedures to ensure employee fitness to work, role-specific induction and refresher training is aligned to safe work execution requirements
- Monitor employee performance deficiencies identified during safety audits and assessments and advise on training interventions to address
- Co-design, plan and monitor Business Partner specific safety campaigns, ensuring alignment with operational goals and objectives
