POSITION: Winding Engine Driver
JOB GRADING: C-Lower
DEPARTMENT: Engineering - Infrastructure
SITE: South Deep Gold Min
The Winding Engine Driver (WED) is accountable for operating the South Deep winder systems to ensure the safe transportation of people, materials and ore between underground and surface stations. The WED is further responsible for performing prescribed and ad hoc system testing protocols including proactive and reactive fault identification and timely reporting to ensure safe and optimal winder system performance and to minimise downtime. The WED is required to maintain detailed logs of applicable operational and maintenance activities and to collaborate with maintenance and operational teams to coordinate scheduled winder and conveyance tasks and activities
Minimum Requirements:
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- Winding Engine Driver’s Certificate of competence
- Onsetter Certificate
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Winding Engine Driver and established track record of performing the full scope of WED accountabilities
- Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

- Proven track record in safety leadership
- Independent, proactive thinker and ability to schedule and deliver work within tight deadlines
- Ability to remain focussed and calm under various pressure situations
- Proven interpersonal, collaborative and communication skills
- Proficiency in operating a winder, advanced understanding of winder maintenance regimes and fully conversant with applicable statutory regulations, reporting and escalation protocols
- Conversant with WED appointment in relation to Mine Health and Safety Act Regulation 16.86, applicable sub regulations of the Mine Health and Safety Act and schedule 4 of the Minerals Act
- Conversant with the government code of signals as approved by the Mine Engineer
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure personal health and safety of oneself and that of team members by applying relevant standards and procedures in all planning and execution of Winder and related operations
- Contribute to a culture of zero harm by participating in all safety campaigns, adhering to all requirements as prescribed in relation to legislation, health, safety, environmental, security policies, and procedures, and by the application of specific instructions to own work area and task completion
- Perform prescribed winder and related installation inspections and testing in accordance with applicable Mine Health and Safety Act regulations, the Minerals Act and applicable Company standards
- Participate in daily shift handover and team task planning activities ensuring that all planned and ad hoc shaft, infrastructure and related winder and installation inspections, maintenance and repairs are clearly understood to ensure seamless safe work execution
- Execute daily routine WED tasks according to legislation, regulations, policies, and procedures within prescribed guidelines
- Ensure the continued safe shaft transportation of people, materials, and ore to support the operation in achieving its objectives and goals
- Ensure compliance with quality control standards and procedures to maintain high standards of winder installation operations
- Ensure that all required shift activity reports, defect log systems and incident reporting processes are duly, accurately and timeously completed as prescribed in regulation and/or operational standards
