JOB GRADING: C Lower
DEPARTMENT: Engineering - Infrastructure
SITE: South Deep Gold Mine
The Beltsperson is accountable for ensuring efficiency of conveyance through quality installations, fostering the smooth and effective flow of production through preventative maintenance. The incumbent is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repairs of surface and underground conveyor belt systems.
Minimum Requirements:
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- Beltsperson certificate or equivalent with Belt Splicing, Repair and Maintenance
- Valid driver’s licence
- Minimum of 2 years’ mining conveyor belt maintenance experience
- Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment
Key Competencies:
- Proven track record in safety leadership
- Independent, proactive thinker and ability to schedule and deliver work within tight deadlines
- Proficient in conveyor belt maintenance, belt splicing, tracking and troubleshooting
- Strong understanding of mechanical systems and tools
- Proven interpersonal, collaborative and communication skills
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure health and safety of self and team members by applying relevant standards and procedures in all planning and execution of maintenance activities
- Perform inspections in accordance with the Mine Health and Safety Act regulations, and Company standards
- Contribute to a culture of zero harm by adhering to all requirements as laid down by legislation, health, safety, environmental, security policies, and procedures, and by the application of specific instructions to own work area and task completion
- Promote and develop team work to become an affective team member
- Monitor and regularly inspect belts, pulleys, bearings and other components for any signs of wear or damage, and report issues promptly
- Monitor the efficient and safe movement of materials along the conveyor belt systems ensuring that belts are running smoothly and aligned to standard.
- Conduct scheduled maintenance of assigned conveyor belt systems and installations ensuring adequate job preparation such as availability of spares, material and consumables
- Respond swiftly to assigned breakdowns and ensure that tasks are completed in a timely manner and in compliance with quality control standards and procedures
- Identify and maintain the required level of spares, material and consumables and book consumption against the maintenance defect log system
- Work overtime, standby and be available for callouts as required
