POSITION:                 Driver Forklift 

JOB GRADING:          B Lower

DEPARTMENT:          Commercial Services: Warehouse

SITE:                           South Deep Gold Mine

 

The Forklift Driver is responsible for the safe operating of assigned forklifts to move and stack merchandise including the loading and unloading of material from delivery trucks and underground material cars. These operations further include the transportation of items within and safe storage of material according to standard operating procedures. All assigned tasks are conducted in accordance with prescribed safe operating standards and routine maintenance inspection protocols.

 

Minimum Requirements:

 

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Forklift driver’s license
  • Valid driver’s license
  • At least 2 years’ experience as Forklift operator in a mining environment
  • Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Maintains Safety, Health and Environmental practices according to standards and procedures
  • Performs prescribed pre-use equipment inspections according to standard pre-start checklists and reports deficiencies to supervisor
  • Performs basic maintenance on equipment e.g. top up engine oil, water and hydraulic oil, check for oil leaks and clean equipment according to standards and procedures
  • Conducts mandatory pre-task risk assessments to ensure that the appropriate task risk assessment is done to ensure safe task execution
  • Operates the forklift to safely load, offload trucks and material cars, as well as stacking and packing of heavy items according to prescribed safe work operating standards
  • Ensures that loading is always within the specified working weight, dimensions and loading location/positions as defined by prescribed safe working standard operating procedures. Importantly, the operator is accountable for seeking supervisory intervention and/or guidance in the event of any uncertainty or queries in relation to continued safe work execution
  • Performs end of shift procedures according to standards and procedures e.g. parks the forklift at the designated area, cleans equipment and reports to supervisor
  • Adhering to Surface Traffic Management Plan as set out by the mine standard
  • Safe operation of forklift at all times
  • Performs any other activities necessary for the effective completion of his/her work
