POSITION: Geology Assistant
JOB GRADING: B Upper
DEPARTMENT: Technical Services
SITE: South Deep Gold Mine
The Geology Assistant is responsible for overseeing safe work cycle delivery in relation to geology sample core unpacking, performing quality assurance and quality control (QAQC) checks to specified standards, managing core storage, conducting basic geological surveys, and supporting the exploration team through various tasks related to underground drilling, site investigations, and environmental compliance.
Minimum Requirements:
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- Diploma in Geology or Geology Certificates
- Minimum 2 years’ working experience in an underground gold mining environment
- Experienced in geological data processing software packages and technology interfaces utilised within the mineral resource’s environment
- Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

- Knowledge of geological data processing software packages and technology interfaces used within the mineral resource environment
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure health and safety of self and team members by applying relevant standards and procedures in all planning and execution of maintenance activities
- Perform inspections in accordance with the Mine Health and Safety Act regulations, and Company standards
- Contribute to a culture of zero harm by adhering to all requirements as laid down by legislation, health, safety, environmental, security policies, and procedures, and by the application of specific instructions to own work area and task completion
- Interacting daily with the Geology team to arrange daily work activities and ensure they are fully planned and coordinated
- Assist with exploration and production activities such as core handling, core sampling, grab sampling, stope observation and underground mapping
- Marking and cutting core samples to specified intervals, ensuring precision
- Collaborating with geologists and drillers to address any drilling or core-related issues
- Ensure that sample and core handling and data recording processes meet quality assurance and quality control (QAQC) standards
- Oversee core sign-off, and ensure adherence to SOPs
- Complete all tasks associated with the daily and weekly sample dispatch services to the assay laboratory
- Ensure work areas are kept clean, tidy and free of hazards
