POSITION:                 Instrumentation Mechanician Surface Risk

JOB GRADING:         C-Lower

DEPARTMENT:          Metallurgical Plant

SITE:                           South Deep Gold Mine

 

The role of the Instrument Mechanician Surface Risk is to install, service and maintain field instruments and programme systems within the Metallurgical section relating to fire detection, telephones, cameras, gas detection equipment, analytical measuring equipment, etc

 

Minimum Requirements:

 

  • Grade 12 or NQF L4 equivalent
  • Relevant Engineering Instrumentation Trade Certificate
  • Have at least 3 years’ experience in Process Control Field Instrumentation
  • Be in possession of a code 08 (EB) drivers licence
  • Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

 

Key Competencies:

 

  • Proven personal safety record
  • Self-starting and able to work with minimum supervision
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Have extensive knowledge of and diagnostic/fault finding capability in Industrial Field Instrumentation in relation to fire detection, telephones, cameras, gas detection equipment, analytical measuring equipment, etc.
  • Knowledge of Fire Detection and gas monitoring systems
  • Sound analytical and decision-making skills
  • Able to identify problems and proactively resolve them
  • A high level of attention to detail
  • A high level of motivation, strong work ethic
  • Computer Literate (Office packages, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Participate in all safety, health and environmental campaigns and ensure the application and maintenance of sound safety practice at all times
  • Conduct and execute all pre-work and planned task risk assessments ensuring that all relevant safety standards and procedures are adhered to during task execution
  • Accountable for the installation and maintenance of all types of Field Instruments relating to fire detection, telephones, cameras, gas detection equipment, analytical measuring equipment, etc
  • Ensure that all planned maintenance, breakdowns and related installation and project tasks are executed according to operational and OEM standards and specifications
  • Participate in assessing instrumentation effectiveness and make recommendations on equipment and system improvements to enhance operational effectiveness and performance
  • Ensure effective and accurate requisitioning of spares prior to task execution and minimize wastage in managing inventories
