The South Deep Gold Mine is offering aspiring Employees and or prospective Applicants from within our Host Communities interested in pursuing a career in Mining, the opportunity to enter into a formal Learner Miner Learnership programme

To qualify as an Applicant from a Host Community you would need to either:

a)        Be a resident of one of our Host Communities being Bekkersdaal, Zuurberkom, Thusanang, Hillshaven, Westonaria, Poortjie, Simunye, Kalbasfontein or Jachtfontein, or

b)        Successfully passed Grade 12 and or matric at a school situated within one of the said Host Communities mentioned hereinabove.

The programme offers practical work-based training to enable learners to adapt effectively in the world of work and to be employable at the end of their programme.

 

Minimum Requirements:

 

  • Grade 12 (NQF 4) or equivalent qualification being an N3 (with two languages passed)
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a mining operation
  • Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

Key Competencies:

 

  • Abide by all health and safety rules / regulations applicable on the mine
  • Undergoing technical training as prescribed by MQA/ DMRE during the Training Programme
  • Maintain consistent performance as per scheduled technical evaluation cycles
  • Take personal accountability for driving own career development and initiating developmental discussions
  • Actively engage with HRD and technical oversight team to obtain feedback
  • Adhere to the company`s conditions of employment, policies and code of conduct
  • Promoting teamwork and being an effective team member
  • Abide by the values of South Deep Gold Mine, i.e. Safety, Respect, Collaboration and Responsibility
  • Proficient in English oral and written communication skills

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Consistently apply safe work practices in accordance with prescribed standards, procedures, and site requirements
  • Identify, report, and escalate any safety, health, environmental, risk conditions, incidents, or accidents to the immediate supervisor for corrective action
  • Participate in the risk assessment with the Artisan on the work to be carried out
  • Assist artisans with execution of daily maintenance work
  • Handle, clean and store tools used in a safe manner
  • Ensure good housekeeping in workshops, area of maintenance and general areas around the Plant
  • Report any hazards or risks exposing the health and safety of fellow employees
  • Perform standby duties when required
