POSITION: Officer Employee Engagement
JOB GRADING: CL
DEPARTMENT: People
SITE: South Deep Gold Mine
This role supports the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of internal communication and employee engagement initiatives that enhance information flow, build trust, and contribute to a positive workplace culture at South Deep. This includes executing defined communication programmes and tasks that strengthen the organisation’s employer brand, improve employee engagement, and ensure effective two-way communication through content development, logistics coordination, and tracking of engagement activities.
Minimum Requirements:
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- Diploma or Degree in Communication, Public Relations, Journalism, Human Resources, or a related field
- At least 3 years’ experience in an HR-related and/or communication field
- Be declared medically fit for the position and the environment, as determined by the risk based medical examination at the relevant Gold Fields Occupational Health and Safety Centre, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

- Effective communicator with sound spoken and written English communication skills
- Independent, proactive thinker and ability to schedule and deliver work within tight deadlines
- A high level of motivation, strong work ethic and self-starting attitude
- Be able to handle conflict, cope with pressure and manage time effectively
- Demonstrate integrity and above average interpersonal abilities
- Demonstrate a good understanding of employee engagement principles to support effective campaigns, events, and recognition initiatives
- Demonstrate operational cultural appreciation and awareness
- Proficient in using basic multimedia, digital tools like PowerPoint, Adobe, Canva and social media platforms to create internal communication and campaign content
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure health and safety of self and team members by applying relevant standards and procedures in all planning and execution of operational activities
- Contribute to a culture of zero harm by adhering to relevant health, safety, environmental, security policies, and procedures, and by the application of specific instructions to own work area and task completion
- Apply internal communication standards and support line leaders in adhering to communication protocols
- Support the collection and interpretation of employee engagement data to inform communication planning and decision-making
- Assist in drafting and delivering timely, accurate internal messaging for operational drumbeat, safety-related or crisis situations
- Contribute to the planning and coordination of assigned onsite engagement activities, including recognition days, toolbox talks and wellness campaigns
- Create internal communication content across various multimedia formats such as emails, posters, and noticeboards
- Coordinate internal communication efforts on content and distribution platforms such as Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, and Outlook campaigns
- Collect and summarise employee feedback from digital polls or suggestion boxes for engagement reporting
- Co-facilitate interactive employee sessions, including engagement and feedback events
- Participate in communication activities across various shifts, including outside standard working hours when required
- Build constructive relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure consistent messaging and local relevance
