POSITION: Pump Operator
JOB GRADING: B1
DEPARTMENT: Engineering Infrastructure
SITE: South Deep Gold Mine
The Pump Operator Engineering Infrastructure is accountable for the safe operation of centrifugal, submersible and vertical spindle pumps in the immediate underground shaft environment, ensuring the safe and efficient de-watering of the mine
Minimum Requirements:
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- Divers licence
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience as a pump operator in a deep level mining environment, with a proven track record and experience in maintenance, the upkeeping of slurry pumps, centrifugal clear water pumps, and vertical spindle pumps
- Be declared medical fit for the position and environment, as determined by risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure health and safety of self and team members by applying relevant standards and procedures
- Application of pre-use inspection on equipment by means of a checklist and report deficiencies to supervisor
- Performs basic maintenance on equipment e.g., top up bearing oil, replace pump gland packing, ensure all guards are in place and operational, inspection of oil leaks and cleaning of equipment according to standards and procedures
- Ensure full understanding of operational operating tasks assigned for the day or on ad hoc basis
- Ensure strainer boxes are cleaned regularly and agitation in dams are working effectively
- Ensure all safety devices is up to standard and any sub-standard condition observed is reported to Supervisor immediately
