Quality Controller : Drill & Blast

The Quality Controller : Drill & Blast is accountable for conducting and continuously improving operational Drill & Blast Quality Assurance and Quality Control standards, Planned Task Observation effectiveness and operational crew coaching interventions.  The accountabilities further include analysing and compiling Drill & Blast Compliance Reports designed to optimise safe work practices, high quality drilling, accurate in-stope reconciliations and lateral developments and, optimised blasting fragmentation.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12 qualification or equivalent
  • Blasting ticket for scheduled mines or rock breaker certificate
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in mass mechanized underground mining production, drill and blast and related activities  
  • Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

  • Proven safety leadership capability with established safety campaign delivery record
  • Accomplished frontline team and people leader with advanced inter and intra-team collaboration
  • Effective communicator with sound spoken and written English communication skills
  • Proven track record of applying initiative, being a self-starter and work independently
  • Sound understanding of end-to-end drill rig operations
  • Proven proficiency in drill and blast design, planning and interpreting drill and charge plans
  • Advanced proficiency in explosives handling including application of Electronic Delay Detonator systems
  • Computer proficiency in the application of integrated management systems and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the Health and Safety of self and team members by applying relevant standards and procedures in the  planning and execution of operational activities
  • Contribute to the culture of Zero Harm by participating in and contributing to operational safety campaigns, applying relevant legislative, operational and safe work standards and regulations and, instituting and monitoring appropriate remedial actions as required
  • Conduct and participate in assigned inspections, investigations and auditing/quality control activities to ensure compliance with relevant MHSA regulations, explosives management and company standards
  • Develop, refine and schedule operational Quality Assurance /Quality Check (QA/QC) planned task observations (PTOs) against which to assess safe, quality and productive work cycle delivery by operational and support crews in relation to workplace housekeeping, daily operational activity preparation, marking, drilling, charging and timing effectiveness
  • Initiate timely corrective interventions which may include direct coaching of operational and support crews to remedy potential deviations from established safety, quality and productivity standards
  • Record relevant observations, corrective actions initiated and, proposed recommendations to reinforce the sustained delivery of safe, quality and productive work practices
  • Participate in and contribute to the collaborative refinement of operational QA/QC standards, PTO effectiveness and operational crew coaching interventions.  This will include providing input to optimising the Operate for Reliability (O4R), Maintain for Reliability (M4R) and associated training interventions and standards
  • Analyse, collate and publish Drilling Compliance Reports to quality assure drill pad preparation activities and drilling  accuracy ensuring the highlighting of deviations and recommended remedial actions
  • Compile Blasting Compliance Reports on in-stope reconciliation, lateral developments and blasting fragmentation
  • Participate in and contriibute towards drill and blast process effectiveness sessions aimed at the continuous improvement and optimisation of safe, quality and productive cycle activities
