POSITION:                 Reduction Operator 

JOB GRADING:          B Lower

DEPARTMENT:          Metallurgical Plant

SITE:                           South Deep Gold Mine

 

The Reduction Operator’s role is to ensure consistent efficiency in sampling, sample preparation, Engineering Backfill, and Chemical Offloading within the Metallurgical Plant. This role demands a strong commitment to safety, environmental care, and operational excellence, encompassing safe chemical handling, backfill preparation, and adherence to strict safety and environmental standards and procedures.

 

Minimum Requirements:

 

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience in a Metallurgical Plant, Engineering Backfill and Chemical offloading
  • Valid drivers’ licence
  • Valid surface TM3 equipment licence/s
  • Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

Key Competencies:

 

  • Proven track record in personal safety leadership
  • Proficiency in understanding and applying relevant Safety and technical Standard Operating Procedures
  • Knowledge of basic Cyanide Management standard operating procedures (International Cyanide Management Institute)
  • Knowledge of sampling and sample preparation
  • Be self-driven and able to work with minimum supervision and deliver work within tight deadlines
  • Good spoken and written English communication proficiency
  • Proven interpersonal, collaborative and communication skills
  • Basic Computer literacy

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Ensure Health and Safety of self and team members by applying relevant standards and procedures in all planning and execution of tasks and activities
  • Contribute to the culture of Zero Harm by adhering to all specified health, safety, environmental and security policies and procedures
  • Collect representative QAQC samples of ore, concentrate, backfill or other materials at various stages of the plant's operation
  • Maintain and clean sampling equipment, such as sample cutters, crushers, and splitters, to ensure accurate and consistent sample collection
  • Supervise the safe transfer of chemicals from the delivery vehicle to the designated storage tanks or processing equipment
  • Maintain accurate records of off-loaded quantities, chemical identities, and any relevant observations or incidents that occur during the process
  • Clean-up of any spills or leaks after chemical offloading and ensure that spilled chemicals are properly contained, neutralised, and disposed of according to set operational standards and guidelines
  • Responsible for maintaining housekeeping standards in area/s of responsibility
  • Be willing to work overtime and shifts as required
