POSITION:                 Engineering Superintendent: Shafts

JOB GRADING:         D – Lower

DEPARTMENT:          Engineering

SITE:                          South Deep Gold Mine

 

The Engineering Superintendent – Shafts is accountable for planning, organising and optimising vertical shaft operations, logistics and underground working areas.  The incumbent assumes a 2.9.2 MHSA appointment over the assigned vertical and related infrastructure to ensure safe operational performance and, delivery aligned to company standards, procedures and planned maintenance regimes.

 

Minimum Requirements:

 

  • Grade 12 or equivalent with a relevant Trade Certificate
  • Minimum of 8 years’ shaft operations experience with at least 5 years at shaft foreman or equivalent level
  • Proven track record in supervising vertical conveyances, shaft logistics, and associated infrastructure
  • Advanced proficiency in associated legal/regulatory standards
  • Advanced proficiency in rigging, slinging and the safe and effective planning, scheduling and execution of material conveyance
  • Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a heat tolerance Screening Test

  • Advanced safety leadership with proven safety campaign delivery record
  • Accomplished team and people leader with strong inter- and intra-team collaboration and influencing skills
  • Advanced knowledge of vertical shaft systems and infrastructure, ground handling systems, fixed plant and pumping and, associated maintenance strategies
  • Advanced knowledge of shaft logistics support and materials conveyancing
  • Advanced knowledge of Medium Voltage reticulation systems
  • Experienced in budget and cost management for relevant equipment, machinery, infrastructure and relevant mining sections

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Actively participate in and lead operational safety, health, environmental and risk management campaigns ensuring demonstration of Purposeful Visible Felt Leadership
  • Remain abreast of relevant changes in appliable statutory and regulatory changes and ensure compliance with safety standards and procedures
  • Conduct regular safety and risk management inspections and audits to proactively eliminate and mitigate operational risks
  • Participate in and lead safety incident and accident investigations ensuring the implementation and monitoring of remedial actions.
  • Develop and maintain optimal team sourcing, capability development and performance management team oversight practices to ensure safe, consistent and optimal team delivery
  • Enable and maintain a working environment that contributes to the Gold Fields’ aspirational culture transformation,  improved employee morale, increased productivity and efficiency
  • Collaborate with Engineering leads to develop short, medium and long-term operational interventions and projects to optimise machinery/equipment and associated infrastructure in relation to planned maintenance, acquisition, commissioning and decommissioning
  • Participate in and contribute toward the development, planning and execution of optimal asset efficiency and production delivery planning aligned to cyclical and ad hoc production planning activities
  • Implement and monitor controls within the unit to minimise/mitigate potential equipment and machinery risks
  • Participate in, refine and execute defined asset maintenance practices and tactical interventions to optimise shaft and ground handling performance aligned to key maintenance drivers and KPIs
  • Stay abreast of advances and developments in shaft and ground handling industry practice and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to implement new technologies and processes and, enable integration with related areas such as infrastructure, logistics, procurement, operational production and support, etc.
  • Develop, present and manage annual operational budgets, ensure operational efficiency and overall cost-effectiveness of operations
