The Supervisor Engineering Shafts is accountable the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the shaft section which includes the shaft infrastructure, conveyances, stations, levels, loading installations, water tunnels, declines and change houses. This accountability assumes a leading role in ensuring effective shaft operations in accordance with prescribed safety and risk management standards and, the elimination of production delays.

 

Minimum Requirements:

 

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Permanent Blasting Certificate and Onsetter Certificate
  • At least 5 years’ experience as a Miner/Timberman and team supervisor in a Shaft environment
  • Proven proficiency in basic rigging and slinging within a shaft operations environment
  • Be computer literate specifically regards the MS Office Suite
  • Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

 

Key Competencies:

 

  • Intermediate operational safety experience with sound appreciation for safety standards and record management
  • Good communication, interpersonal and team leadership skills
  • Proven organisation skills - planning, organising, leading, and controlling 
  • Proven proficiency in basic rigging and slinging and, working at heights
  • Prepared to work overtime/irregular hours and perform standby duties as required
  • Working knowledge of planned maintenance systems
  • Computer literacy with basic MS Office proficiency
  • Working knowledge of SAP

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Contribute to the culture of Zero Harm by participating in and leading team safety, health, environment and risk management campaigns
  • Ensure compliance with all Shaft and related standards, regulations, and instructions, relevant Codes of Practice, etc. and, initiating remedial actions or escalating as required
  • Oversee and perform required equipment and installation risk assessments, lockout/tagout and related activities in area of accountability
  • Schedule, assign and monitor team daily maintenance and routine activities to ensure safe work delivery, delivery to standards and, conduct regular Planned Task Observations (PTOs) to ensure team effectiveness and coaching to improve overall delivery
  • Schedule and conduct Shaft examinations in terms of the Mines Code of Practice and MHSA
  • Schedule, coordinate and oversee maintenance planning and execution for shaft infrastructure, stations and levels, loading station, bins, water tunnels, declines and change houses
  • Plan, coordinate and oversee the safe and effective Rail-bound tramming and shaft operations
  • Ensure the safe and effective management of explosive magazines including handling, controlling, receiving, and issuing explosives according to the MHSA and mines standards and Procedures
  • Plan, coordinate and oversee the preparation and safe execution of all shaft rigging and slinging tasks
  • Lead and participate in failure investigations on installations, equipment, components, etc. to implement and/or recommend changes in maintenance and operating practices
  • Engage with OEM, suppliers and intermediaries as required to assist with investigations and the formulation of remediation interventions, etc.
  • Perform administrative duties to ensure record accuracy and availability, budget compliance and spares availability
