POSITION: Supervisor Strata Control
JOB GRADING: C Upper
DEPARTMENT: Technical Services
SITE: South Deep Gold Mine
The Strata Control Officer is accountable for providing comprehensive Rock Engineering support to the mining, planning, and engineering disciplines to ensure the proactive management and reduction of risk in mining operations
Minimum Requirements:
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- Chamber of Mines Strata Control Certificate with Competent A and B certification
- 4 years’ underground mining experience
- Valid driver’s license (EB)
- Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

Key Competencies:

- Sound Interpersonal, collaboration, communication, and writing skills
- Resilient and able to achieve stringent deadlines
- Proficiency in geotechnical core logging and underground mapping
- Proven track record in underground hazard identification and risk assessment
- Have operating proficiency of Microsoft Office software suites and relevant rock engineering software knowledge
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Actively engage with and lead various aspects of the mine’s HSE campaigns
- Apply appropriate legal, environmental, occupational health and safety and risk management standards in all Rock Engineering and related activities
- Coordinate with co-workers across mining to create a work environment in which they can perform to their full potential
- Apply and recommend appropriate amendments on standards for section safety and performance
- Conduct and participate in routine underground, site-specific, detailed FOG investigation and incidents and conduct relevant analyses on rock engineering related incidents and accidents
- Assist with the reviewing of mining layouts, provide geotechnical input into daily, weekly and monthly planning activities and, contributes to operational risk management and planning from a geotechnical perspective
- Measure, analyse, reconcile, and report on rock / geotechnical activities, quality and compliance with planned parameters
- Install instrumentation to monitor rock mass behaviour and support performance as part of the overall ground control monitoring strategy and, record, review and interpret results as required
- Contributes to continuous improvement and asset optimisation initiatives at the mine
