POSITION: Trackless Longhole Stope Rig Operator
JOB GRADING: C – Lower
DEPARTMENT: Mining
SITE: South Deep Gold Mine
The Trackless Longhole Stope Operator is accountable for the safe operation, set-up and tramming of the assigned Simba M6C or S7D drill rig, achieving established daily operational targets, recording prescribed operational data and reports and ensuring optimal care of operating rig and related equipment.
Minimum Requirements:
- Matriculated or Equivalent with a recognized Blasting Certificate
- Longhole Stope Rig (M6C/S7D) Certificate
- Dover A result
- Drivers licence
- At least 2 years’ experience as a Longhole Rig Operator
- Secure full Gold Fields Security and Related Occupational Screening
- Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

Key Competencies:
- Established personal safety delivery record
- Strong inter and intra-team collaboration skills
- Sound spoken and written English communication skills
- Completion of a machine appreciation awareness programme (O4R/M4R or equivalent)
- Ability to cope with ambiguity with high personal resilience and change adaptability
- Established problem-solving skills
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintains Safety, Health and Environmental practices according to standards and procedures
- Carries out a pre-use inspection by using a checklist and physically testing the equipment, takes relevant corrective action and reports to Supervisor
- Drills required holes using the relevant drill rig according to set standards and procedures, diagnoses problem areas and reports any safety concerns to relevant Supervisor e.g., flammable gas detection, bad ground conditions, ventilation deficiency
- Maintains and performs repairs on equipment according to standards and procedures e.g., replace mechanical and electrical components, scheduled planned maintenance, fault finding
- Performs end of shift procedures e.g., ensure the drill rig is parked in designated position, apply brakes. Reports to relevant Supervisor on day’s activities
- Performs any other activities as per instruction necessary for the effective completion of his work
- Operating Simba drill rig to drill long hole stope holes as per drill design
