POSTION:            Winding Engine Driver

JOB GRADING:   C-Lower

DEPARTMENT:    Engineering - Infrastructure

SITE:                      South Deep Gold Mine

 

The Winding Engine Driver (WED) is accountable for the safe transportation of men, material and ore from underground to surface.  The WED must have good interpersonal skills, to be able to communicate with relevant stakeholders on the mine.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Winding Engine Driver’s Certificate of competence
  • Onsetter Certificate
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Winding Engine Driver
  • Be declared medically fit for the position and the environment, as determined by the risk based medical examination at the relevant Gold Fields Occupation Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test

  • Independent, proactive thinker and ability to schedule and deliver work within tight deadlines
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of Winder operations and procedures e.g. signals and moving in the right direction

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Ensure health and safety of self and team members by applying relevant standards and procedures in all planning and execution of maintenance activities
  • Perform inspections in accordance with the Mine Health and Safety Act regulations, and Company standards
  • Contribute to a culture of zero harm by adhering to all requirements as laid down by legislation, health, safety, environmental, security policies, and procedures, and by the application of specific instructions to own work area and task completion
  • The WED plays a crucial part in the day-to-day operation of the Mine.  Safety and soberness should be at the heart of each driver.  The driver must be fully conversant with the government code of signals as approved by the Mine Engineer
  • Executing daily routine work according to legislation, regulations, policies and procedures within prescribed guidelines
  • Safe shaft transportation of men, material, and mineral to support the operation to achieve its objectives and goals
  • Ensure that Planning of the job is done with his/her supervisor and co-workers on a daily basis
  • Ensuring that organizing and controlling is done in accordance with other stakeholders
  • Coordinating with co-workers and creating a work environment in which he/she can perform to full potential
