POSITION:                  Winding Engine Driver Coordinator

JOB GRADING:          C – Upper

DEPARTMENT:           Engineering – Infrastructure

SITE:                           South Deep Gold Mine

 

The Winding Engine Coordinator is responsible for coordinating Winding Engine Driver activities, staffing and shift arrangements to ensure the safe, efficient and continuous transportation of personnel, materials and ore between shaft stations. The role oversees adherence to operating procedures and safety standards, monitors driver performance and competency, coordinates shift handovers, and ensures timely reporting and escalation of equipment defects and operational risks in accordance with mine requirements and applicable statutory obligations.

 

Minimum Requirements:

 

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Winding Engine Driver’s Certificate of competence
  • Onsetter Certificate
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Winding Engine Driver of which 2 years is at a supervisor level, established track record of performing the full scope of WED accountabilities
  • Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

  • Proven Proven track record of safety leadership and adherence to safe operating practices
  • Ability to work independently, anticipate operational requirements, and prioritise and complete tasks within prescribed timeframes
  • Ability to remain focused, exercise sound judgement and respond calmly under pressure
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills to support effective coordination of shaft operations
  • Demonstrated proficiency in operating winding equipment, with a sound understanding of maintenance requirements, statutory obligations, and reporting and escalation procedures
  • Thorough understanding of the statutory requirements governing Winding Engine Driver appointments, including the referenced Regulation 16.86, applicable regulations under the Mine Health and Safety Act, and Schedule 4 of the Minerals Act
  • Thorough knowledge and accurate application of the government code of signals, as approved by the Mine Engineer

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Safeguard personal and team health and safety by applying prescribed standards and procedures when planning and executing winding operations
  • Promote a culture of zero harm through participation in safety initiatives and compliance with applicable legislative, health, safety, environmental and security requirements
  • Perform prescribed inspections and tests of winding equipment and associated installations in accordance with applicable legislation and Company standards
  • Conduct planned task observations to verify that Winding Engine Drivers perform their duties in accordance with operating procedures and safety standards
  • Verify that logbooks are accurate, complete and countersigned as required
  • Coordinate driver allocation and relief coverage to ensure winding machines are appropriately staffed throughout scheduled operations
  • Promptly report equipment defects and escalate maintenance concerns to the Engineer in accordance with prescribed protocols
  • Monitor daily compliance with Safety, Health, Environment, Risk and Quality (SHERQ) requirements and reinforce individual accountability within the team
  • Implement corrective actions arising from audits and inspections within prescribed timeframes
  • Monitor individual performance against agreed objectives and provide timely feedback and coaching to address identified gaps
  • Address employee performance and conduct concerns within delegated authority, recording discussions and escalating matters in accordance with Company procedures
  • Coordinate shift handovers, daily task planning and routine Winding Engine Driver activities to ensure continuity and compliance with prescribed operating requirements
  • Ensure the safe and efficient shaft transportation of personnel, materials and ore in support of operational objectives
  • Maintain compliance with prescribed quality standards for winding equipment and associated operations.
  • Ensure shift reports, defect records and incident reports are completed accurately and submitted within prescribed timeframes
